Trekking to Gulabi Kantha (13th October – 18th October 2021) was one of the most serene and untouched Himalayan experiences I’ve ever had. Tucked away in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand near the Yamunotri Valley, this offbeat trail sits at an elevation of around 4,000 meters (13,100 feet). Doing this trek in mid-October meant witnessing the meadows transition into rich golden hues under crisp, clear autumn skies.
“Standing on the pristine golden meadows of Gulabi Kantha, with the majestic Bandarpoonch peak glowing right before my eyes, felt like discovering a hidden Himalayan paradise.”
Here are the major highlights from my journey, what made this trek so special, and essential tips if you are planning to explore this hidden gem:
Highlights of the Gulabi Kantha Trek
-
Panoramic Views of Himalayan Giants: The summit ridge rewards you with close-up, grand vistas of the Bandarpoonch massif, Black Peak (Kalanag), and the Sentinel peaks of the Yamunotri region.
-
Vast Alpine Meadows (Bugyals): Walking through the expansive, rolling meadows of Gulabi Kantha felt completely raw and untouched compared to more crowded commercial treks.
-
The Magic of Autumn: October brought perfect trekking weather—crisp cold air, endless blue skies, and incredible visibility for photography throughout the day.
-
Tranquil Trails: Starting from the base region near Hanuman Chatti, the trail passes through quiet, dense forests of oak and rhododendron before opening up into vast high-altitude pastures.

My Personal Takeaways & Experience
What set Gulabi Kantha apart for me was the absolute peace on the trail. Unlike mainstream routes, there were no crowded campsites or noisy groups. Sitting on the grass at high camp, watching the sunset cast a reddish-pink glow over the snow-capped peaks (which gives ‘Gulabi’ Kantha its name), was pure bliss. It felt like having a front-row seat to the raw beauty of the Himalayas.

Practical Tips for Future Trekkers
-
Best Time to Visit: May to June offers vibrant green meadows and blooming flowers, while September to November delivers crystal-clear skies, golden landscapes, and sharp mountain views.
-
Base Point: The trek generally begins from Hanuman Chatti (near Yamunotri), making it easily accessible via Uttarkashi/Dehradun.
-
Preparation: Though considered a moderate trek, the steep climb to 4,000 meters requires good physical endurance, proper trekking boots, and warm layers for freezing evening temperatures.
