Before reaching the Valley of Flowers, there is an important place that every trekker on this route gets to know—Gangaria.
Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, Gangaria serves as the main base point and gateway for two famous Himalayan journeys: the Valley of Flowers Trek and the Hemkund Sahib Trek.
For us, Gangaria was an important part of the Valley of Flowers journey.
But reaching there was itself a trek.
A Full Day of Walking to Reach Gangaria
We started our trek towards Gangaria in the morning, knowing that we had to cover roughly 12 km during the day.
The goal was simple:
Reach Gangaria before evening.
It sounds easy when you just say “12 km,” but walking continuously through the mountains is a completely different experience.
You are not walking on a flat road.
There are climbs, descents, uneven trails and changing mountain landscapes along the way.
As the day progressed, the feeling slowly changed from “we are going for a trek” to “we are actually getting deeper into the mountains.”
And that’s one of my favourite things about trekking.
The journey itself becomes part of the experience.
Gangaria — Where Two Journeys Begin
What makes Gangaria particularly important is its location on the route to two very different experiences.
From here, trekkers head towards:
- 🌸 Valley of Flowers — famous for its alpine meadows and seasonal flowers.
- 🛕 Hemkund Sahib — a high-altitude Sikh pilgrimage site surrounded by Himalayan mountains.
So Gangaria feels almost like a gateway to the mountains.
You reach this small mountain settlement after spending hours on the trail, and from here, the journey branches toward two completely different destinations.
For our trip, the next destination was the one we had been waiting for:
Valley of Flowers.

The Feeling of Finally Reaching Gangaria
After walking around 12 km throughout the day, reaching Gangaria felt like a small achievement in itself.
The legs were tired.
The day had been long.
But there was also excitement because we knew that the next day we would finally enter the Valley of Flowers.
That feeling of reaching a campsite or mountain village after a long day of walking is something that’s difficult to explain to someone who hasn’t trekked.
You are tired, but you’re also happy.
You eat something simple, rest for a while, look around at the mountains—and then start thinking about the next day’s adventure.
One More Night Before the Valley
For me, Gangaria was more than just a stop on the itinerary.
It was the place where the excitement for Valley of Flowers really started building.
We had already walked for hours to get there.
Now the destination we’d been planning for so long was finally close.
The next morning, we would leave Gangaria behind and head towards the Valley of Flowers, where I would see something I had never experienced before—a Himalayan valley covered with flowers.
And after that long walk to Gangaria, we were finally ready for it.
The real adventure was about to begin. 🏔️🌸
