Trekking to Ali Bedni Bugyal (4th July – 10th July 2022) marked my very first experience exploring high-altitude Himalayan meadows (bugyals). Situated in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of around 3,354 meters (11,000 feet) to 3,800 meters, Ali Bedni Bugyal holds the proud distinction of being considered among the largest alpine meadows in all of Asia.

Trekking here in early July meant catching the meadows at their peak vibrancy, right as the monsoon rains transformed the landscape into a vast, emerald-green paradise.

Here are the major highlights, personal takeaways, and essential tips for anyone planning to experience this grand trail:

Highlights of the Ali Bedni Bugyal Trek

  • Asia’s Largest Meadow Expanse: The endless, rolling green pastures of Ali and Bedni stretch as far as the eye can see without a single tree in sight, offering a sense of openness that is hard to find anywhere else.

  • Front-Row Views of Mt. Trishul & Nanda Ghunti: On clear mornings, the massive snow-clad walls of Mt. Trishul (7,120m) and Nanda Ghunti rise directly behind the green meadows, creating one of the most iconic views in the Himalayas.

  • Bedni Kund: A serene high-altitude sacred lake located at Bedni Bugyal that reflects the surrounding peaks and holds deep spiritual significance for locals.

  • Dense Forest Trails: Before opening into the vast meadows, the trail winds through magical forests filled with ancient oak, rhododendron, and walnut trees starting from Lohajung and Wan.

My Personal Takeaways & Experience

Being my first bugyal trek, the sheer scale of the landscape completely took my breath away. Stepping out of the forest canopy directly onto the ridge of Ali Bugyal felt like entering a different world. Trekking in July brought fresh mountain rain, misty valleys, and millions of tiny alpine wildflowers blooming across the grass. Walking barefoot on the soft meadow grass with clouds floating right beside me is a memory I will carry forever.

Practical Tips for Future Trekkers

  1. Best Time to Visit: May to June brings clear skies and lush green grass, while July to August offers vibrant flora during the monsoon. September to November provides crisp autumn views with golden-brown meadows.

  2. Base Point: The trek starts from Lohajung, which serves as the central base village for both Ali Bedni Bugyal and the Brahmatal trek.

  3. Monsoon Gear: If trekking in July like I did, invest in high-quality waterproof gear, rain ponchos, waterproof backpack covers, and anti-leech socks for the lower forest sections.
